Our History
Lady Musgrave Island, part of the Outer Great Barrier Reef, is near the town of 1770. Named for Lady Musgrave, it holds cultural significance for local Aboriginal tribes and is known as Wallaginji (“Beautiful Reef”). Historically used for guano mining and tourism, it now boasts thriving ecosystems with Pisonia trees, numerous bird species, and serves as a nesting site for turtles. The surrounding lagoon is perfect for snorkelling, featuring reef sharks and vibrant coral.
The Town of 1770, originally Round Hill, marks Captain Cook’s 1770 landing. Known for its sunsets and wildlife, it remains largely natural. The Mergard family, who established local fishing charters in 1985, continue to operate eco-tours, preserving the town’s charm and ecology.
